    Treatment in three steps

Depending on the referral and your dentist’s request, in consultation with you, treatment can sometimes be performed immediately, or you will be given an appointment for treatment after the consultation.

We usually reserve 2 hours for the treatment. Depending on the complexity of the anatomy.

The molar is always numbed, even though sometimes there is no feeling left in the molar. That thought alone is reassuring. As a result, you are relaxed and the treatment can be performed calmly.

First, the molar is isolated from the rest of the teeth and mouth using a rubber surgical drape – the “cofferdam” – to ensure safe and hygienic work.

After this, root canal treatment is performed in three steps: the so-called Clean, Shape and Pack.

    Clean

This involves carefully removing the inflamed, infected tissue and cleaning the channels in which the blood and nerve vessels run.

Once this is about 80% done, an electronic “depth gauge” is used to measure the length of each channel individually.

    Shape

After the depth is precisely determined, the canals are carefully cleaned, rinsed and dried to the bottom of the root tip.

During cleaning, the specialist simultaneously ensures a beautiful shape, “the shape,” with a smooth wall.

This is very important for adequately filling the space and thereby sealing the channels.

    Pack

The Gutta Percha (extracted from an indonesian rubber plant) is inserted – coated with a special sealer.

With heat and some pressure, the material is pressed into all the channels and side channels. In the process, a fraction will be squeezed through the tip of the root to create a clear stop.

This ensures the specialist that the ducts are completely filled. The X-ray, which is also always taken after treatment, clearly shows this plug.

Finally, the treated molar is finished with a traditional filling as a sealant. On this, your own dentist will then place a final restoration.

    Aftercare

After treatment, existing symptoms are usually over immediately. Sometimes, however, there may be some afterthoughts, varying in nature. The inflammation, which was dormant, may flare up slightly to violently after treatment. This may persist for several days, but you need not worry about this.

Although the inflamed nerve tissue has now been removed, and the canals are now completely clean and properly filled again, around the root tip the jawbone is still slightly inflamed, the cause has been removed.

However, the whole healing of this just needs some time, and you can feel free to take a painkiller for this. You could compare it to a splinter in a finger; once it has been removed, it will take some time for the area, where the splinter has been, to be completely healthy and pain-free again.

In rare cases, a thick cheek occurs after treatment along with severe throbbing. Then consideration will be given to prescribing an antibiotic to suppress this flare-up.
